Our mission and objectives

Our mission is to help adults with liver disease and to prevent liver disease. We strive to secure a greater recognition of the growing burden of liver disease on UK society, and to understand and disseminate information on the major factors that cause liver disease. We strive to improve the level of services that are provided for people with liver disease, in diagnosis, treatment and prevention. We want people to look after their livers in the same way as they have learned to look after their hearts!

The British Liver Trust is the only charity in the UK dedicated to helping adults affected by all liver diseases through support, information and research.

Liver disease is recognised as one of the five most serious health problems in the UK. Awareness of its steady growth and its causes remains low. Available treatments and research severely under-resourced.

Most people remain unaware that their lifestyles are having a major impact on the health of their liver and their life expectancy.

Most people remain unaware that 50% of liver disease is not related to alcohol.

Most people remain unaware of the risks related to hepatitis infection.

Our key objectives are:

  • To raise the profile of liver disease by addressing the lack of public knowledge, challenging preconceived ideas and reducing confusion
  • To increase funding for the promotion of healthier life styles to help prevent liver disease, particularly relating to alcohol, obesity and hepatitis infection
  • To improve methods of detection and speed up diagnosis
  • To encourage recognition of the urgent need for action in increasing and providing more equal and specialised medical support for those with liver disease
  • To encourage and support research into better treatment and services for all those with liver disease
