The study for an initial year included:
- The prevalence and incidence of liver disease in the UK, including trends
- Morbidity and mortality from liver disease, including trends
- Quality of life
- NHS resource utilisation at primary, secondary and tertiary level
- Healthcare and societal costs
- Transplantation
- Social and ethnic diversity
- International comparisons
The study was used to inform future work and development by both charities in the UK and encompassed the broad diversity of liver disease today, including alcohol, viral hepatitis, metabolic, inherited and autoimmune diseases, as well as liver surgery and transplantation. Liver disease is managed by a mixture of specialists, including hepatologists, gastroenterologists, surgeons and infectious diseases, which further reinforces the complexity of the study.
This report addresses information on the burden of chronic liver disease (CLD) in the UK. There are four main aspects:
Section 1: Review of routine data and peer reviewed literature on CLD;
Section 2: National survey of information collec tion on CLD patients;
Section 3: Feasibility study of prospective ascertainment of new cases of CLD in
Southampton General Hospital;
Section 4: Epidemiology of Liver Disease in Tayside (ELDIT).
