    The value of support

The word ‘support’ is so vague. It is widely used but means different things to different people. It could be anything from a comforting hug to a hundred pounds! So we looked it up in a dictionary. This is what it said: “…carry all or part of the weight; keep from falling or sinking; provide for; strengthen, encourage, give help to…” This is what support groups are all about.

We have met numerous people who are connected with support groups and one strong theme comes through – support groups can really help. No matter who you are, any illness can leave you feeling vulnerable. Being part of a group of people with something in common and willing to share each other’s burden, you will meet people in your situation, others who have been where you are now and are further on. You can receive support and give support to others (when you are able), in an environment where people understand the trauma that you may be experiencing. Where you can be listened to, understood, express your feelings if you wish, be accepted, share experiences, feel comforted, strengthened and gain knowledge and the ability to cope.

Support groups offer both practical and emotional support. Many of them have strong relationships with medical staff and hold meetings where doctors, nurses and other professionals give up their time to give talks to patients and answer their questions. Groups usually offer members a mixture of events and are led by volunteers with first hand experience of liver disease, either patients themselves or carers.

Why are liver support groups so valuable? They help inform, educate and support patients in a way that only those who have ‘been there’ can. The opportunity to talk to fellow patients, some with more experience and knowledge, can really help to reduce fear and gain perspective. Relatives can also benefit. They can be sick with worry, feel helpless and struggle to hide their own anxieties in order to support their loved one.
