Elizabeth Cottrel's story

Elizabeth Cottrell underwent a liver transplant 16 years ago, and is now living a very normal life with a very positive outlook.

She had complained of nausea and fatigue to her GP in the weeks leading up to the operation, and blood tests had revealed alarming results. After suffering acute liver failure and falling into a coma, she was admitted to Norfolk and Norwich Hospital and then rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, for a liver transplant three days later. Elizabeth does not remember any of this and woke up in intensive care, where she stayed for the next three and a half weeks.

She received a huge amount of support from friends, family and support groups, and in 2006 completed a parachute jump to raise money for the Liver Transplant Unit in Cambridge. Just two years later in 2008, Elizabeth experienced yet another transplant, but a partial one of the aorta, a valve in the heart. Once again, the surgery was ground-breaking and fully successful!
