Diageo Great Britain has sponsored the latest edition of the British Liver Trust’s Alcohol and Liver Disease, one of the charity’s most frequently requested publications.
The Trust’s Chief Executive Alison Rogers said “Given alcohol’s role in causing some 50% of liver disease, we are really pleased that a major alcohol producer is helping the Trust to produce information materials that play a role in informing people about sensible drinking. We want everyone to be aware of how much alcohol is too much and what can happen to the liver as a result of alcohol.”
The newly revised leaflet gives sensible drinking guidelines, explains how to calculate units and describes the effects of binge drinking. It also gives information on alcoholic liver disease, tests and treatment along with useful contacts.
Benet Slay, Managing Director, Diageo Great Britain, says: “While we know that most people do drink responsibly, there is an urgent need to provide people with information on how alcohol, if abused, can affect their long-term health. People need to understand that drinking to excess can have extremely serious consequences.”
The number of people with liver disease is still rising. It is the fifth largest cause of death in the UK, underlining the need for greater awareness to reduce the health harm from alcohol being misused.

-
The British Liver Trust is Britain’s only national liver disease charity for adults. We work to improve the lives of people suffering from liver disease with key roles in education, support and research.
-
Edition 6 of the Trust’s publication on Alcohol and liver disease was published with an unrestricted educational grant from Diageo. The publication has been reviewed by a leading hepatologist and by patients with liver disease. Alcohol producers have had no influence on the content of the publications.

Liver disease is one of the UK’s five ‘big killers’ and the only one on the rise. The Trust is working urgently to encourage prevention and investment in treatment and care for people with liver disease. Much of the increasing incidence of liver disease stems from lifestyle trends – relating to alcohol, obesity and viral hepatitis. However, liver disease has many other causes including genetics, abnormalities in the immune system and even the medicines we take. The Trust is working to raise awareness about the liver and combat the stigma associated with liver disease.

The Trust provides a comprehensive website www.britishlivertrust.org.uk, free medical helpline – 0800 652 7330, and distributes a wide range of information leaflets to individuals and healthcare professionals. In addition, the Trust is a contact point for support groups nationwide, as well as co-ordinating funding and providing support for research.
